The dark, the silent, and the cold

January 9, 2017

The Sun barely touches the horizon. It's the darkest period of the winter. Even the moon disappear behind the trees. No light after midnight. We started to set up our tent. It was already -30°c.

We were prepared well, or at least i was. Two sleeping bags, two mats. Only the face mask was missing. Anttoni had a bit different plan. He had 3-season sleeping bag and he shivered in bivy whole night. Frost covered everything.

Even though i like winter and cold, forecast for the upcoming days was harsh to read. Temperatures stayed around -30 and -40 degrees. Not ideal for ski touring trip. Nor any other outdoor activity.

So we went to east. Seeking for the snow and hoping best to get some turns. Temperature started to get warmer. Only -22°c anymore. Clouds started to gather and wind was rising. 20m/s above treeline. I don't know is it colder to sleep in -35°c or stand in this temperature with this wind.

If the wind can form unstable layers, it can also enhance amount of snow. Western winds carried all the fluffy snow to eastern faces. To right there where we wish to have it.

This way every year should start. Thanks for the company to Antoine Le Grand!
